Massachusetts now requires most firearms to be registered with the state. Gun owners must start complying by October 28, 2026.
Our members have a lot of questions. The honest answer is that no advocacy group, including GOAL, can give you legal advice. Each owner has to weigh their own situation and their own comfort with risk.
GOAL has put together a detailed registration guide. It covers who must register, deadlines, private sales, inherited firearms and penalties. One key point: registering a firearm does not mean the state considers it legal for you to own. Licensing, large-capacity and “assault-style” rules are all separate.

Vote NO on Question 9 on November 3
The registry is just one part of Chapter 135, the 2024 firearms law. We believe this law burdens law-abiding gun owners while doing little to stop criminals, who won’t register guns or follow storage, magazine or transport rules.
Question 9 asks whether to keep Chapter 135. A NO vote repeals it. Please vote, and remind your friends and family that NO means repeal.
Please share this with your club, on Facebook and at upcoming meetings.
